The Management Advantage: The Skill New Managers Often Overlook

Many people assume that becoming a successful supervisor or manager is primarily about leading people. Leadership matters — but there is another skill that often determines whether a manager consistently delivers results.
It is Administrative Management.
Unfortunately, this is one of the least discussed — and least developed — management competencies.
Many supervisors are promoted because they are excellent technical performers. They know the job, understand the business, and have earned the respect of their peers. Yet once promoted, they suddenly find themselves responsible for planning work, coordinating teams, managing priorities, monitoring performance, conducting meetings, following up on commitments, and ensuring operational excellence.
Meet Alicia - a 33 year old; recently promoted to Operations Supervisor after being one of the company's top performers.
Alicia had always been a top performer. She was dependable, and the person everyone relied on to get things done. So, when she was promoted to Supervisor, the decision seemed obvious.
A few weeks into the role, reality set in. Managing people, priorities, meetings, reports, and deadlines was very different from doing the work herself.
Alicia quickly realized that success in management required more than technical expertise - it required a whole new set of skills.
These responsibilities require a very different skill set. Without the right administrative management skills, many capable managers find themselves constantly reacting rather than leading. Days become consumed by emails, interruptions, last-minute requests, and unresolved issues, leaving little time for strategic thinking or team development.
Administrative management is not about paperwork. It is about creating structure, maintaining control, and ensuring that execution happens consistently.
Managers who master this discipline create clarity, establish systems, and keep their teams focused on results.
In today’s fast-moving workplace, technical expertise alone is no longer enough. Supervisors and managers need the operational discipline to turn plans into action and intentions into measurable outcomes.
NEXT IN THE SERIES We’ll explore the hidden cost of weak administrative management — and why even talented managers can struggle without the right systems and practices. Learn more about Alicia's journey in our next article! |
